Since 1979, I have served as a Certified Preceptor for California Nursing Home Administrators, and since 1997, I have been a preceptor affiliated with the Master of Gerontology Program at San Francisco State University. In the ever-expanding field of managing senior living alternatives, I am committed to finding and helping emerging leaders prepare for a career in this field. It has been personally rewarding to watch so many of my proteges find responsible positions in the field of aging services: administration, elder law, alternative housing, health services education, and regional leadership positions in multi-community assisted living and housing communities.

"As the attached testimonials convey, John Milford exemplifies the spirit of mentoring - the unique ability to detect latent talent and to coach people through significant career choices. The time invested early in his career earning his Master of Divinity degree nurtured his innate ability to listen to and perceive the potential in his staff and proteges over the past 35+ years." - Candiece Lindstrom, Lead Director of Marketing, NCPHS

 - "...since 1997, John has capably influenced the graduate students of the Gerontology program at San Francisco State University as an outstanding Administrator-in Training Internship preceptor... He has fostered excellence in our graduate Gerontology students, and has had a major impact on the field by  virtue of his mentoring. John's inspiration as a mentor is sought by students and colleagues alike as he facilitates both personal and professional growth." Dr. Darlene Yee-Melichar, Professor and Coordinator, Gerontology Program, Long Term Care Administration

"When I was appointed as the Executive Director of Los Gatos Meadows in 2001, John served not only as a colleague but also a mentor in navigating the challenges of managing a CCRC. He was someone that I could call on for advice with tough administrative issues, operational challenges, or creative problem solving. I especially welcomed his experience and expertise in developing a strong working relationship with resident leadership. When I moved into the corporate position of Senior Director of Clinical Services at Episcopal Senior Communities, John continued to be a mentor. He and his leadership team were frequent partners in developing new health and wellness programs to be implemented throughout the company." Barbara J. Reid, RN, MHSA, CPHQ, Executive Director, Ave Maria Senior Living
